Assets Initiative

Individuals and community working together to develop youth skills and relationships that encourage their success.

Youth Program Development Coordinator

Rebecca Krzywda is the Youth Program Development Coordinator for the Brockport Central School District, Mrs. Krzywda works 20 hours per week, helping the community to find ways to support and build assets in youth (see assets information below).

In addition, Mrs. Krzywda works directly with Brockport High School and Middle School students on a weekly basis to encourage asset development. The high school Assets Leaders Club and middle school Assets Club members work on various community events and projects. They also enjoy participating in local parades and community events. One project that the groups have worked on is the Community Garden.

WHAT ARE ASSETS?

Assets are positive experiences, opportunities and personal qualities that all youth need to be responsible, successful and caring individuals. The Search Institute has identified 40 Developmental Assets that are critical for a young persons successful growth and development. Developmental assets include External Assets (1-20), provided by families, individuals and communities; and Internal Assets (21-40) are personal qualities of young people.

Research indicates young people with 30 or more assets are less likely to engage in problem behaviors like drug use, sexual activity and violence, and more likely to engage in positive behaviors like leadership, value diversity, maintaining good health and succeeding in school. See link below for a complete list of the 40 Developmental Assets.

Asset #1: Family Support

  • Family life provides high levels of love and support
  • 73% of youth surveyed in our community have this asset in their lives.

Community leaders from the Village of Brockport, including the Brockport Central Schools, and leaders from the Towns of Clarkson, Hamlin, and Sweden would like our community to get involved in this initiative to build healthy youth. Any parent, group, neighbor, youth or business interested in learning more, please contact Rebecca at 637-1975 or rebecca.krzywda@bcs1.org.
