Five-Hour Course

Safe Driving Techniques (Five-Hour Course)

Effective Oct. 1, 1987, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles of the State of New York requires five hours of classroom instruction as a prerequisite for obtaining a driver’s license. Applicants affected by this regulation are those applying for a first time driver’s license; those applying for a driver’s license because of lapse of one-year renewal grace period; and those applying for a new driver’s license as a result of revocation of previous license. The five-hour training period must be completed prior to the applicant applying for a road test. Persons having completed a regular driving education course do not need this program.

The following regulations are applicable to all prospective registrants:

• Registration must be completed at the high school in person by noon on the Tuesday immediately preceding the class. There is a seven-person minimum to hold this class, so registering on time will reduce the risk of cancellation.
• Students will be admitted on a first come first serve basis.
• Applicants must be 16 years of age or older.
• Applicants must bring their valid learner’s permit to register.
• Applicants must pay the $40 registration fee upon registering and completely fill out the registration form.

Classroom instruction will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 - 8:30 p.m. Dates are specified below. These classes will be held in Brockport High School Room 158. Students may bring a snack or lunch with them to the class.

An official completion certificate, which is valid for one year from the day of issuance, will be awarded upon completion of the five-hour program. This certificate must be presented when applying for a road test. It does not qualify participants for reduced insurance rates.
