Hill School Dress Code

Dear Parent or Guardian:

We would like to make you aware of the Dress and Grooming expectations for students at the Fred W. Hill School.   By being familiar with the standards we look for, you can make more informed purchases and avoid questions about the appropriateness of certain articles of clothing after they have been purchased.

Appropriate Dress and Grooming

The student’s individual appearance is mainly the responsibility of the student and the parents or guardian.  You must always keep in mind that your mode of dress, personal appearance, cleanliness and personal behavior all determine how people perceive you and also demonstrate personal pride.  Your dress and grooming should be clean, neat and appropriate for school.  Health and safety standards should be the major consideration that determines your appearance.  Clothing and footwear must not have articles attached that will damage floors or furniture or create a safety hazard to you or other students.  Any mode of dress or personal appearance which is disruptive and disturbing the progress of the educational program will not be permitted.  (This is according to District policy).

  • New York State Health Law dictates that there are to be absolutely no bare feet in the building at any time.
  • Hats and coats are not to be worn in the building.
  • No tops, blouses or see through that expose midriff/back.
  • No bare backs, midriffs, or tube tops.
  • No spaghetti strap attire without a shirt underneath or over the top.
  • Shorts, skorts, culottes, skirts and dresses must be worn at appropriate length. e.g.the fabric of the clothing must extend beyond the fingertips.
  • Pants and shorts must be appropriately secured at waist height.  Pants should be worn at an appropriate length that does not cover up shoes or sneakers.
  • No clothing advertising alcoholic beverages, drug related items, profanity, that are suggestive, or contain suggestive double meaning.
  • No hats and/or sunglasses during the school day (students bring hats/head coverings to school must store them in their locker.
  • No skin tight or spandex-type clothing without an appropriate long shirt that must be at least fingertip length.
  • No flip flops, thong sandals, clogs or any type of backless shoes may be worn (for the students’ safety).
  • No makeup should be brought to school for health reasons (e.g. sharing of makeup).

All students found to be in violation of the dress code will be required to change to appropriate clothing.

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR PERSONAL APPEARANCE – IT IS ONE OF YOUR MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES.
