Dear Parents and Guardians,

Reports about an online predator targeting students in neighboring counties have surfaced in the news this weekend. While we are not aware of any incidents pertaining to students within Brockport Central School District, we feel it is important to use this as an opportunity to remind students of safe digital behavior.

According to Spectrum News, students in Canandaigua, Penn Yan and Wayne Central were targeted on social media platforms including Instagram and Snapchat. The article states that the person, or people, responsible creates numerous social media accounts, friends the students and requests personal information and photos. The suspect then uses that information to blackmail students into sending additional information and photos. New York State Police are currently investigating these reports.

Following these incidents, we encourage you to talk with your children about their social media presence and strategies they can use to stay safe. Common Sense Media is a valuable resource that provides education to promote safe technology and media use for children. Here are some links from Common Sense Media and other trusted sources containing tips and advice regarding how to talk to your children about safe and responsible social media use:

One of our district goals is to educate students about responsible use of the internet and online programs. We continue to promote digital citizenship so our students may benefit from the integration of technology into curriculum to deepen student engagement and improve student achievement. With your partnership, we can help our students learn, work and navigate life skills in a digital world while remaining safe.

If you have questions about how to speak with your children surrounding safe online behavior, please contact your child’s school counselor. If you believe your child has been targeted by an online predator, please contact the police.

As always, thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe.

Best,
