Brockport students compete, place in 2023 SkillsUSA States Conference, Championships

Five Brockport Career and Technical Education students placed in the top three, in their respective competitions, during the 2023 New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships this spring.

The conference took place at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY from April 26-28 where students who participate in BOCES 2 CTE were able to compete in events related to their pathway.

Two Brockport students placed first in their respective competitions: Automotive Technology student Adrian Bartz in Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair; and Dental Assisting student Briana Lewis in Dental Assisting. Bartz and Lewis are two of six BOCES 2 CTE students who will represent WEMOCO at the national conference in Atlanta this June, along with WEMOCO SkillsUSA Lead Advisor Jennifer Probst and additional professional members.

Two Brockport students had second-place finishes in Syracuse. HVAC/Plumbing student Owen Donovan had an individual second-place win in Plumbing. Carpentry student Stephanie Maar was part of a three-female team to place second in Occupational Health and Safety.

A bronze medal was also won by a Brockport student as Carpentry student Matt Dearman collaborated with three additional construction-related students for a third-place win in Team Works.

Leadership activities are also a core function of the event and 12 BOCES 2 CTE students represented the WEMOCO SkillsUSA chapter as delegates including three Brockport and Dental Assisting students: Aliya Plaskett, Sydney Poormon and Emily Van Ornum.

In total, 21 BOCES 2 CTE students combined for 10 medals and more than 100 WEMOCO CTE Center students attended the event as competitors, delegates, event workers and guests.
