Students in grades 10-12 taking multiple Technology courses at Brockport Central had the opportunity to learn from professionals at the Annual Rochester Careers in Construction Day at the Monroe County Fleet Center on Thursday, October 21, 2021.

Nine students from Brockport High School were able to attend the event- trying their hand with equipment by bending pipes, soldering copper pipe, hammering nails, laying brick, and driving skid-steers, excavators and bucket lifts. Several students from Brockport also participated in the popsicle stick bridge contest, designing and building their own bridge out of popsicle sticks to compete for several awards. Although the group partaking in the opportunity to explore potential options for their future was a small sample size this year, those who did attend the event were excited to go back and share what they experienced throughout the day with their fellow students. It was evident that students in attendance really enjoyed their time exploring the field of construction, as BHS Technology Teacher Richard Barrett proves by sharing that many of the students have already asked if they can go again next year.

This is the fifth year the District has brought students to the Careers in Construction Day event. Barrett was accompanied on the trip by Brockport High  School Counselor David Messbauer. The two said they really enjoy bringing students to the event each year, explaining how they do everything they can to give and show students a wide array of opportunities available after high school.

"We want to thank Monroe County for offering this amazing experience to our students,” says Barrett. “Each year, this event continues grow in scope and increases opportunities for our students to learn, talk with construction professionals, and actively participate throughout the experience. We are already looking forward to next year's event!”
