Quick thinking and courage earned seventh grader CJ Piatt a Brockport’s Best Award from the Brockport Central School District Board of Education on March 3.

He was recognized for his actions on Jan. 21, when he helped a fellow student who was choking during lunch.

During the meeting, Board of Education Vice President Dave Howlett shared an excerpt from the nomination submitted by teacher Shannon Howlett, describing the moment CJ stepped in to help.

“CJ Piatt demonstrated quick thinking, courage and exemplary leadership when he came to the aid of a fellow classmate who was choking,” the nomination stated. “After noticing that the student was in distress, CJ immediately rose from his seat, approached the student, and performed the Heimlich maneuver. His prompt and effective actions successfully dislodged a piece of a steak sandwich, allowing the student to breathe normally again.”

The nomination continued, noting that CJ’s calm response in an emergency and willingness to help without hesitation reflect outstanding character and responsibility.

Howlett concluded the recognition by praising CJ’s actions and the example he set for the school community:

“CJ, your courage, composure and selfless, life-saving actions in a moment of crisis represent the very best of Brockport, and we are incredibly proud of you.”
