AVID Juniors Showcase Changemaker Service Projects

AVID juniors recently gathered in the high school library to present their completed changemaker service projects during an AVID Showcase.
The projects began last year when 11th grade AVID students were challenged to become changemakers in their community. Using their Clifton Strengths and personal passions as a guide, students selected a focus for their project, researched their topics, and developed plans to make a positive impact on others.
In September, students carried out their projects, reflected on what they learned, and considered ways to continue their efforts beyond the assignment.
The projects covered a wide range of topics. Some students presented to middle school students about the negative impacts of vaping and drug use. Others organized a bottle and can drive to support a local animal shelter. Multiple students focused on supporting mental health. Some left positive messages throughout the building for students to discover, while others created sets of index cards with coping strategies for students who may be struggling. Another student led a clothing drive that brought in so many items that a schoolwide clothing giveaway is now planned for February.
The AVID Showcase gave students the opportunity to highlight the impact of their projects, reflect on what they learned, and celebrate the positive changes they helped create in the school and community.
